GeoCogen Eclépens
Swiss Geo Energy (SGE) is a company from Vaud specialised in exploration, sustainable exploitation and storage of natural geothermal resources. GeoCogen Eclépens is the company's flagship project. To achieve this, we work closely with businesses and public authorities, both local and national, in order to find pragmatic solutions that respect the environment.

About GeoCogen Eclépens
The project’s objective is to exploit the renewable heat from regional underground geological structures via a geothermal power plant. The plant will harvest the natural subsurface heat to feed the Cadcime district heating network and generate local green electricity.
This project aligns with the Confederation’s and canton’s energy strategies. It also aims to demonstrate the capacity of geothermal energy to contribute to the energy transition and to provide local energy to regional inhabitants.

Analysis of geophysical data
Swiss Geo Energy conducted a geophysical campaign from September 20 to October 6, 2023.
The team is analysing this data to map subsurface geological structures through a nine-month, two-stage process: first processing data to image the subsurface to 4,000m depth, then interpreting results to identify geological layers and potential geothermal reservoirs.
Based on these findings, SGE will decide by end-2025 whether to apply for underground research permits for exploratory drilling.

Eclépens geophysical campaign completed
This 104 km² geophysical campaign covered 32 municipalities across the Jura-Nord, Morges, and Gros-de-Vaud districts to identify promising geothermal targets within geological formations suitable for hydrothermal energy development. Following the successful completion on October 6, SGE maintained ongoing communication with local communities, keeping residents and local authorities informed about operations and addressing questions throughout the campaign.
Promising underground formations identified
The extensive data collection involving over 21,000 installed geophones and 13,000 vibrated points revealed multiple promising geothermal zones beneath the Eclépens region. These potential deep reservoirs—captured in a three-dimensional volume of 500 km³—showed potential for high-temperature extraction capable of generating both heat and electricity across the region.
Commercial viability confirmed for regional energy production
The identified targets' proximity to existing infrastructure confirmed the Eclépens region's suitability for supplying multiple district heating networks and electricity generation through the GeoCogen Eclépens project, positioning it as a key area for sustainable geothermal development.
Deep geothermal energy: clean and sustainable
Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source that does not depend on seasonal variations, weather conditions or the day-night cycle. It is entirely in line with the energy strategies of the Confederation and the canton of Vaud.
Geothermal energy has a small environmental print throughout its value chain, and a geothermal power plant footprint is negligible since the energy valorisation occurs underground.
